What is TV Tune™?
Portrait Displays’ TV Tune simplifies set-up and optimizes the operation of HDTVs and all connected video devices in a home theater setting. Portrait Displays’ patent-pending PixeLava™ technology allows unidirectional communication directly with HDTVs, enabling them to automatically self-configure or manually allow the consumer to choose their preferred video settings for the best live and playback experience. TV Tune has a long list of features that may be enabled by the manufacturer. These features may include Wizard, Optical Input Device Calibration (DVD, PlayStation®3, and Xbox®360), On-Screen Assistant, Embedded Pattern-Based Tuning, THX® Media Director™, Firmware Updating, and Theft Mode. In addition, TV Tune has modes to support the retail environment to enhance the picture of the television, as well as hotel settings for TV control and management.
TopWhat is PixeLava™?
Pixelava is a unidirectional communication method to send and interpret commands within the television over any input – HDMI, component, S-video, composite, or SCART. PixeLava communication is embedded within the television controller and can be used within any of the logic chips of television controllers, e.g., scalers, MCUs, deinterlacers etc. Commands are encoded in the menu system or content of video streams. PixeLava-embedded HDTVs decode the commands using the DRAM of the controller as processing space. Then the decoded commands are translated and executed on the television panel. The commands can be encoded into any video stream.
TopHow does PixeLava support firmware updating?
PixeLava provides a means to future proof the consumers’ investment in their HDTV. Just as commands can be sent to the display via the video stream, firmware can also be updated by playing a firmware-update DVD disk in a DVD player that is connected to a PixeLava embedded HDTV. The firmware binary is encoded into images that are uploaded into the frame buffer and decoded within the television. Once the entire image has been uploaded and the check sum is verified, the flash memory is reprogrammed with the new firmware file. The end result is an inexpensive way to update firmware in the field without the need for a technician service call or return of the HDTV to the service center.

Portrait Displays’ OSA is integrated into the television and accessed from the remote control. Content can be adjusted quickly while being viewed to enhance the hue and saturation with one button automatic adjustment. On supported HDTVs, the OSA also allows side-by-side, before and after views, so the viewer can easily decide which adjustments will change the way the content appears to fit their personal taste.
