New Calman iQIYI Workflow and Color Calibration Lab Unveiled at Joint Beijing Press Conference “Color in Motion” with Portrait Displays, iQIYI, and the Beijing Film Academy

[Beijing, China – May 13, 2025] — The joint press conference “Color in Motion: Redefining a New Standard in Film and TV Production”, co-hosted by Portrait Displays, iQIYI (China’s leading online entertainment platform), and the Department of Cinematography at Beijing Film Academy, took place today at the Chinese Society of Cinematographers Communication Center in Beijing.

During the event, the three organizations officially announced the establishment of a Color Calibration Laboratory at the Beijing Film Academy and unveiled the new Calman iQIYI Workflow—a custom workflow developed to meet the exacting standards set forth by iQIYI. Initiated by iQIYI and the Department of Cinematography at Beijing Film Academy, and utilizing Portrait Displays’ industry-leading Calman® color calibration software and hardware, the Color Calibration Laboratory is dedicated to standardizing professional color management throughout the entire production pipeline. Focusing on key stages including on-set monitoring, post-production, color grading, and end-user consumption, the lab will build a comprehensive calibration framework that ensures consistent, accurate color from the lens to the living room, delivering a truly immersive visual experience.

Designed as both a hands-on platform and a hub for talent development, the lab will serve as a bridge between academia and industry. It provides real-world training and testing environments for students and professionals alike, while fostering deeper collaboration between educational institutions and the creative technology sector.

A key highlight of the event was the official debut of the Calman iQIYI Workflow, co-developed by Portrait Displays and iQIYI. With iQIYI’s visual standards now integrated directly into the Calman ecosystem, this new workflow allows creators to align with platform specifications efficiently and accurately at every step, from pre-production to final delivery, ensuring consistent, professional-grade results. The workflow features an intuitive interface, supports visual reporting, and provides a transparent, streamlined color calibration experience.

The press conference attracted nearly 100 attendees across the entertainment industry, including post-production companies, visual effects studios, color grading artists, and partners. Leaders from all three organizations officially launched these initiatives by lighting the symbolic RGB “Color Sphere.”

Liu Yuning, Vice President of iQIYI and General Manager of the Production Management Center, commented: “At iQIYI, our long-standing commitment has been to promote the high-quality development of film and television production. We’ve introduced two standards— ‘eXave’ for mobile and ‘eXave MAX’ for large-screen experiences – designed to enhance the visual performance of different display devices through color calibration and device certification. Through this partnership with Portrait Displays and the Department of Cinematography at Beijing Film Academy, we aim to integrate technology and standards, transform industry practices, and empower creators to achieve both artistic expression and technical excellence—delivering premium audiovisual experiences from lens to living room.”

Professor Lei Zaixing, Deputy Director of the Department of Cinematography at Beijing Film Academy, added: “As an institution rooted in imaging education, we are committed to building practical, real-world platforms through academic-industry collaboration, supporting the mutual growth of both talent and the broader film and television industry.”

Eric Brumm, President and CEO of Portrait Displays, shared in a video message: “At Portrait Displays, we believe that color is more than just technical accuracy—it’s a powerful emotional language that connects creators with audiences across cultures. We’re proud to support iQIYI and the Department of Cinematography at Beijing Film Academy on this meaningful journey. Together, we aim to elevate creative expression through color and help shape the future of visual storytelling.”

Todd Gordon, General Manager of Asia at Portrait Displays, emphasized the regional significance of the initiative: “Today marks a pivotal moment for the Chinese TV and Film industry. By combining iQIYI’s color standards, Beijing Film Academy’s academic excellence, and Portrait Displays’ color calibration expertise, we are building a localized ecosystem that empowers storytellers to captivate audiences, starting in China and spreading across the globe. This is how we turn ‘Color in Motion’ into Color Reality.”

Hou Yong, President of the Chinese Society of Cinematographers, emphasized: “Accurate color reproduction is a cornerstone of compelling visual storytelling. This joint initiative sets a benchmark for industry standards and exemplifies the fusion of art and technology.”

The venue also featured an interactive demonstration zone, where guests experienced the complete end-to-end color workflow in action. Showcasing top-tier equipment—including Sony’s flagship 9 Series TV, ASUS ProArt professional monitors, and the AJA ColorBox—each part of the Calman Ready program ensuring best-in-class integration with Calman color calibration software, the demo illustrated how consistent, precision-driven color control can faithfully preserve creative intent at every production stage. The result: truly “what you see is what you get.”
